As gender equity and women empowerment are the concern of the day and in order to bring these concepts into limelight, Baba Farid College of Engineering and Technology, Bathinda celebrated National Science Day and International Women’s Day as Science-o-Mania’10 on 18th March 2010. This event was co-sponsored by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh. The major theme for this occasion was Gender Equity for Prosperity and Peace.
This occasion was graced by eminent personality Dr. Harshinder Kaur, President Dr. Harsh Charitable Trust was the chief guest of the day. She is presently working as a consultant pediatrician in Deptt. Of Pediatrics at Govt. Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. Along with this she is a WHO and UNICEF trained trainer for IMNCI and WHO trainer for National AIDS Control Programme. She gave her views on Gender equity and spoke about another corroding effect of Drug addiction. She said that along with female foeticide the major concerning agendas of the day are dowry system, drug addiction and discrimination between a girl and a boy. As earlier Punjab was known for its strength and bravery and has ended up due to drug addiction, she tried to awaken the youngsters of Punjab to regain their region’s lost glory. She gave a brief view about the brutality of killing the girl child in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. She asked everyone to get an identity by working against this vicious circle of female foeticide, girl child abuse and dowry system. She ensured every youngster that if ever they do not go to the deep roots of this problem this eradication can never occur.
Along with her the guest of honour of the day was Dr. Nirmal Singh, Director- Principal, Malout Institute of Management and Information Technology, Malout. Giving the inaugural address to the occasion, he spoke on the unbalanced gender ratio in our country and said that the mindset of the people needs to be changed. He asked for counseling people for gender equity which would lead to peace and prosperity in future. S. Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, Managing Director, Baba Farid Group Institutions welcomed one and all in this occasion and encouraged the participants to bring out their hidden talent and showcase the world whenever they get an opportunity. Besides this the major events of the day were Oral Presentation, Poster Presentation, Clay Modeling, and Choreography. Students of many other colleges from near and far came to be a part of this occasion. Students of BFCET gave a commendable presentation in choreography by giving a vision of status of women in our Indian society. The stage was handled very efficiently by Er. Gayatri Nair, HOD, ECE Deptt.
The occasion ended up with prize distribution ceremony where the winner teams were awarded with prizes. Ashima, student of Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology stood first in Poster making competition, Priyanka from MIMIT, Malout stood first in Oral Presentation. Along with this the first position was grabbed by team of GZSCET, Bathinda in Choreography and Amit kumar & Namrata in clay modeling.
Dr. Jasbir S. Hundal, Director- Principal Baba Farid College of Engineering and Technology thanked Dr. Harshinder Kaur to grace the occasion and sensitize students on this topic. He thanked all faculty members and students for making this function successful. He appreciated the participation level of every team and thanked everyone for their teamwork and their enthusiastic approach towards this theme of Science- O- Mania’10. He also thanked Convener Er. Sukhpreet Kaur, HOD, CSE Deptt. and Er. Rishav Garg, HOD, Civil Deptt. for their efforts to make the event in the shape it was today.
